Portugal

Back to the map of Europe
Portuguese is the official language of Portugal. When it comes to language, Portugal is probably one of the most homogeneous countries in the world. There are no minority language groups in Portugal and all Portuguese dialects can be inherently understood by all speakers.

Portuguese is also the official language in Brazil, Angola, Mozambique, São Tomé & Principe, Cape Verde Islands, and Guinea-Bissau. It is also spoken in the Portuguese province of Macao on the south coast of China.

There are about 170 million Portuguese speakers in the world. Only 10 million of these live in Portugal. Most of the Portuguese speakers live in Brazil where the majority of the population speaks it. In the other countries, Portuguese is not spoken by more than 20% of the population, and the percentage is often lower.
